International Muslim History Month (May)

May is International Muslim History Month (IMHM). To celebrate, I’m sharing a poem with Islamic themes. The message is universal. The original version I wrote in English and Arabic. By God’s grace, it was translated into Spanish through the arduous work of Norma Margulies, an ardent supporter of interfaith dialogue. 

A masjid is a mosque. According to a Hadith (a collected saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him), “the entire earth is a masjid.”

Norma and I met at a mosque during an interfaith gathering called Solidarity Cup of Tea. And these are the fruits of our labor. I hope you enjoy the poetry below. May it inspire you to search the world over for friendship and love, beauty and peace.

En la mezquita

This morning at the masjid…

Esta mañana en la mezquita...

…somebody took their Shahadah

...alguien tomó su juramento de fe

…somebody prayed Fajr

...alguien rezó su primera oración del día

…somebody signed a nikah

...alguien firmó su contrato matrimonial

…somebody led a Janazah

...alguien dirigió un funeral

This morning at the masjid…

Esta mañana en la mezquita

…somebody called the Adhan

...alguien llamó a la primera oración

…somebody watched soccer

...alguien vio fútbol

…somebody made a new friend

...alguien hizo un nuevo amigo

…somebody recited a poem

...alguien recitó un poema

…somebody felt an endless welcome home

...alguien sintió una bienvenida al hogar por siempre

So many recorded these events on their phones. Like angels on the right shoulder.

Muchos grabaron estos eventos en sus teléfonos.  Como ángeles en el hombro derecho.

So, now we feel less alone. The mosque is where we belong. It is where we perfect our ibadah. It is where we nourish our souls.

Así que ahora nos sentimos menos solos. La mezquita es donde pertenecemos.  Es donde perfeccionamos nuestra fe. Es donde alimentamos nuestras almas.
