How to Delve Inside the Mind of a Muslim

The global Muslim community (viz., ummah) is entering the field of filmmaking at a rapid pace. Muslim artists who speak the language of cinema are showcasing their work across social media platforms, like YouTube, to engage more viewers.

Muslim short films are designed to control and improve representation of the ummah, as well as to present positive images of Islam for the purpose of dawah (i.e., Islamic proselytization).

Encouraging original artistic works that champion the spread of Islam will establish understanding and powerful reflection. Movies with Islamic themes capture the minds and hearts of diverse audiences.

Instead of mainstream stereotypes promulgating violence, it is imperative that peaceful alternatives of nuanced subject matter convey hope in the Islamic world.

In the words of Gordon Parks, a formidable twentieth-century American photographer, the camera is our 'choice of weapons' on the battlefield of ideologies. We fight injustice in its many forms, including poverty and racism. We say Alhamdulillah for everything.

Take a moment, less than ten minutes to step inside the mind of Abdul, an Australian corporate executive. Impetus, a short film, portrays Abdul, a Muslim leading character, as ethical and kind, genuine and generous. His focus is on how to please Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala (SWT) and to attain Paradise.

We learn about the rich inner workings of Abdul’s mind through the inclusion of the voiceover technique. The voiceover interspersed with dialogue gives the audience a glimpse of his interior thought processes while he interacts with key characters. Through conversations with the character’s sister, neighbor, cousin, co-worker, and wife, we see how focused and compassionate, courageous and dependable Abdul is. He attempts to emulate the Prophet (peace be upon him).

What is the true measure of our success? This film intends to spark a discussion about how to please Allah SWT in our everyday life. What does your inner monologue sound like? Who inspires you?

Please write your impression of the short film in the comments section below. May we all be among the rightly guided.

Best,

Yeru
