The use of voiceover is usually associated with God-like omniscience. It is often a technique employed by a dominant, male character. However, in “Oceans of Injustice,” a short film about Palestine, a woman stands at the shore exposing her interior monologue describing the suffering of Palestinians due to their brutal oppression at the hands of the Israeli occupation. Her perspective is captured on camera as a montage of scenes from life in Palestine emerge. This use of voiceover deepens our humanity. It demands we stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine, many of whom were forcibly removed from their homeland. This displacement is portrayed as if the Palestinians were submerged in the ocean, whereas the speaker in this narrated film just gets her feet wet. Our empathy with the Palestinians, though powerful and purposeful, is limited. We do not face the same threat of humiliation in our own homes, but we are invited to share in the hope of liberation. Our success depends on if people come together to take action to attain justice.
Please watch this film and identify with the Palestinian struggle. If they emerge victorious, it will be because many people came together as one. It will be because our Sovereign God showed mercy and love.
